Ciutadella, what to do and how to get to Ciutadella from Menorca

THE HISTORICAL CENTRE OF CIUTADELLA

Ciutadella is possibly the most visited town and surely the most beautiful and interesting on the island, it is also in this area where you can find access to the most famous and most visited beaches like Cala Turqueta, Son Saura, Talaier or Macarella and Macarelleta

Ciutadella is a town with a lot of history, its historical centre is perfect for a quiet walk, getting lost in its narrow, cobbled medieval streets and discovering small houses, palaces of the old nobility, the imposing Cathedral of Menorca, small shops with typical products of the island, and taking some pictures overlooking the small and charming port.

Even if you are not staying in this town you have to visit it, you can’t miss it! In the old Plaza de Armas “Es Born” you will find one of the best and most spacious squares on the islands. The most striking feature is the obelisk in memory of the 16th century Turkish invasion that almost destroyed the entire town. There are several palaces surrounding this square and you can have a breakfast or a coffee in the bar “l’Imperi” very typical among the local people. But you can also have breakfast in the casino of “Es Born”, next to the wonderful theatre, enjoying the wonderful view of the port. And when you’ve enjoyed your morning coffee, pay a visit to the Town Hall building, the former Governor’s palace built on the Muslim “Qasr” which had its own wall separated from the rest of the city.

It is the perfect place to start the itinerary of the maritime walk, enjoy the sunset and, while you enjoy the views, you will surely be able to distinguish from there the silhouette of the mountains of the Tramontana of the island of Mallorca that are right in front of you.

Opposite Plaza Es Born, you have the main street of the old city of Ciutadella that leads you directly to the centre. There you will find the most captivating urban landscapes of this thousand-year-old city; old palaces, small churches, the narrow streets and a lot of atmosphere no matter what time it is. The street “Ses Voltes” is also famous because of its unique arches, just after passing by the Cathedral. You can take advantage and buy a small sweet in the bakery “El Diamante” or the “Pastelería Moll” two classics in this area.

The square “Del Mercat” is another place with a special charm. The center of this square is the fish market, with a building with a special architecture surrounded by a building with arches, accompanied in front of the stalls of butchers all in a building that shares architecture and style. Around it you will find different fruit shops with local Menorcan produce and several cafes which makes it a special environment with a unique charm with that mixture of smells and textures. The port of Ciutadella offers you different atmospheres, if you want to eat fresh, tapas, or a drink during the night you have chillouts and discos if you dare.

THE BEST OF CIUTADELLA

Things you can’t miss about Ciutadella:

·         Festivals of Sant Joan: if you happen to be on 23 and 24 June you can not miss and see these festivals with much history and tradition being the horse and the gentleman the central elements. The events are located all over the area of the historical centre of the town. During these festivities many visitors come but we recommend it because of how interesting and beautiful this celebration can be. As a tip we recommend you to leave the car in the outskirts and walk to the centre because you will find the whole centre closed. Due to the covid these festivities, which are one of the most important icons of Cuitadella, have been postponed until the restrictions are lifted. Hopefully very soon.

·         Take a photo in the Port of Ciutadella: In the Muradeta street there is an excellent view where you can take a photo with the background of the port of Ciutadella, one of the most photographed.

·         Visit the Mill: the mill of the village has been restored recently, with the totally new blades it is quite impressive as it is in the centre of the village. It is also a cafeteria where you can have a coffee or a good breakfast.

·         Lunch or dinner: You should try to visit the restaurant El Balear or have some tapas in the bar “El Tritón” which is right in the harbour with an unbeatable atmosphere.

·         Visit the Cathedral. Right in the centre of Ciutadella’s old town

·         See the sunset at the end of the Sant Nicolas promenade where you will have the silhouette of Mallorca in the background.

·         Visit to Lithica: It is an old quarry of the typical Minorcan stone for construction, El Marés. Today it is a special place where concerts and events are held, as well as being a historical monument.

THE BEST BEACHES NEAR CIUTADELLA

If you are in Ciutadella, you can obviously take advantage of the opportunity to visit the beaches that we have mentioned above (Cala Turqueta, Son Saura, Talaier ou Macarella et Macarelleta) as they are the most famous, but if you also want to enjoy different activities, you can discover the coast and the charms in an intimate and exclusive way. Coasteering in Menorca is something new and is an active way to discover hidden corners of the coast. Discover the hidden caves in the cliffs, go kayaking, snorkeling to discover the seabed and jump from various heights into the sea if you are adrenaline junkies… (jumps are always optional, from 3 to 9 meters).

At Coasteering Menorca we offer you two very interesting routes near Ciutadella. So you can enjoy a day of culture and adventure. Depending on the wind you can do the route Cala Morell – Algaiarens (link) or do the route Cala’n Blanes – Pont D’en Gil (link) two different options each with its own charm and of course with the fun experience of Coasteering in Menorca (link to article What is Coasteering), something different and unique on the island.

The route Cala Morell (link) is located in the north which will allow you to discover a different landscape to the south which is perhaps the best known of Menorca. The north offers you a more abrupt landscape, with more cliffs and a different colour of the sea. The beaches tend to have thicker sand, some are whiter but most are a darker color.

Closer to the beach is the Cala Blanes exit (link), a residential area in the western part of Ciutadella. From here you can discover a little known area with caves and a route to the “pont d’en Gil” a natural rock bridge carved into the cliff over the millennia.

With all this we hope to have helped you a little to know and to have some minimum references to be able to visit and to experience all that Ciutadella can offer you, for sure you will enjoy it and you will not regret all that you will be able to discover in this zone.

The Best Activities at Sea in Menorca

What options do I have to enjoy great adventures in Menorca?

Menorca is an island that even though it is small offers you a variety of possibilities for activities and great outdoor adventures. And these adventures can be programmed not only during the summer but also during the low season, that is, autumn, winter and spring, although it is true that they are more limited. Within the range of possibilities, being an island with a special charm and unparalleled beauty on its coast, some say a beauty touched by the hand of God, most visitors and adventurers seek to enjoy the sea and the endless charms of the coast.

Are the coast and beaches of Menorca as incredible as I have been told?

The coast of Menorca is more than 200 km long, which means that there is a great diversity of landscapes and hidden corners, far from the cities in the middle of wild nature, which makes discovering them a great adventure. There are impressive cliffs of more than 100 meters or smaller cliffs where you can jump or climb (psicobloc) in front of a sea of turquoise and crystalline waters. There are also many caves that are difficult to reach by land and are not very well known even to the locals, small islands near the coast and rock bridges as peculiar as Pont d’en Gil. Minorca has a total of almost 200 beaches and coves, to be exact 197 (check out our blog about Minorca’s beaches); large and small beaches, close to housing estates or far away in the middle of nature, remote and little known, with fine or red sand or stone (…), sandy beaches, a great variety of marine ecosystems of which many are protected and visitable reserves, large and small ports, white villages on the seashore and on the cliffs (…). In inland areas there are also very interesting ecosystems, landscapes of pastures, hills, Mediterranean forests of oaks, dry areas, many places of archaeological interest (the great Menorca Talaòtica), winding roads, narrow paths, villages with much charm and much more.

So we invite you to enjoy and discover Minorca by land or by sea. In the case of doing it by sea this can give you a lot of play and become a great adventure, as you will be able to discover corners that few people have the chance to enjoy. There are many places that are not very accessible by land and other means such as kayak, coasteering or by boat are essential to reach them.

So you can have fun and discover Menorca through the sea in many ways, here we expose some of them:

What are the options for boat adventure in Menorca?

Day trips by boat:

There are several options on the island to hire a pre-determined excursion shared with other travelers (boats of around 50-80 passengers) and discover some already determined corners or beaches. Several companies offer this type of service in different parts of the island, but the most common is on beaches in the south of Menorca and from Ciutadella. For example you have the company Menorca Blava that departs from the port of Ciutadella, and they sail to the south making two stops, one in Son Saura and the second in Cala Turqueta, the rest of the trip passes near Talaier, Cala Mitjana, Macarella and Macarelleta without being able to get off at these.  It includes a paella dish during the journey which lasts about 7 hours, from 10 am to 5 pm. This is a good option to see the coast from the perspective of the sea, although the tour is less personalized and the beaches are the most visited in summer. If you go with babies it is also a good option to do something all in family.

Private boat rental with skipper

This option is not so common as it implies a much higher cost, but you have more freedom to go to the desired places, visit more virgin beaches or less crowded cliffs and make the stops you want within the stipulated time, which makes it a very good option with which to discover different places on the island.

Rent a boat without a license

You can rent these small boats that give you a great freedom to go wherever you want, following of course some important rules of navigation. This option will also allow you to stop in any sheltered corner and dive in the turquoise sea water. It is a good option for groups of friends or families with a smaller budget and a maximum of 4 people, as the boats are small with a maximum engine of 15 horsepower. These rentals can usually be found in the area of Ciutadella or Mahon, on beaches such as Cala Galdana where there is a port. You can rent it for different hours. The disadvantage, if it is important for you, is not having a local guide to show you small places, interesting seabeds, caves hidden in the shadows of the cliffs, but it is a good experience. Some interesting data is that in 2019 there were about 20 shipwrecks with this kind of boats, due to their misuse, getting too close to the rocks and running aground, so much caution and common sense if you dare to use these boats!

Other options to discover the coast of Menorca

Coasteering

All the possibilities of Coasteering have not yet been discovered. The great advantage that makes it one of the most attractive activities is its great diversity and its close relationship with the coast and the seabed during the trip. The Coasteering can combine in one route the sea kayak with hiking along the cliffs, with visits to marine caves, with the snorkelling or scuba diving, with jumps from the cliffs to different heights (from 2 meters to 9 meters and they are always optional) or with a little bit of climbing in the style of psicobloc. If you want to do a complete activity at sea level and get to know the charismatic cliffs, this is undoubtedly the best option for groups of friends and families with children from 3-4 years old (always adapting the activity and duration to their needs). The guides are experts in various sports so they will teach you the techniques of paddling (with paddles that have two leaves and not rowing that only has one), they will introduce you to the world of psychobloc if you feel like doing some climbing, or notions of how to submerge yourself under water with the minimum effort.

Paddle Surf

There is a growing interest in this style of sailing, which is much more leisurely than other modalities.

It is known as Stand Up Paddle, or by its initials SUP, even directly paddlesurf. It is also called paddle surfing or as it would be called in Hawaiian Hoe’he Nalu or even Ku Hoe’he Nalu. But they all refer to the same thing: the sport of rowing with a paddle (a single blade) standing or kneeling on a board.

In Menorca, Paddle Surf or SUP, allows you to reach some of the corners beyond where you started your departure, stand up, jump and swimming, discover, dive or snorkeling (…), the limitation is that you can not go far in this mode, as it does not allow a great voyage, but it is ideal to relax a little and sail in a Zen attitude around the beach where you have rented.

Kayak only

The kayak is an interesting modality to sail longer distances in a calm way to observe the coast, to reach inaccessible places for boats or on foot, to make stops at your leisure from cove to cove or to visit caves among others.

One option is renting a kayak. There are several companies in different beaches of Menorca that can rent you double or single kayaks that will allow you to sail for a certain time (15€/h) wherever your adventurous spirit tells you.

There is also the option of hiring excursions and tours to discover the island in a very complete, exclusive and with many advantages. If you plan to rent the kayak for more than 2 hours (1h is usually quite short time and between the outward and return you will not go very far or you can not stop much in coves or to rest), you should hire a guided tour that includes equipment rental for the same price and you will get the advantages of a route guided by locals experts, who in addition to teach you the techniques of kayaking will show you the most exclusive places, give more content to the activity and make your experience more profitable.

The Coasteering option is even more complete. In Coasteering Menorca you have options from 49€/p and the routes last between 3-6 hours so it can be much more profitable in price, learning and experiences

Wind Surf

Nowadays it is a sport with less and less followers, but it is still an option to enjoy the sea, although in this case it is a more sportive activity and not so much to discover the island. But if you like and want this experience the best place to find this service is in Fornells.

Snorkel

Normally it is an additional activity to others (boat trip or Coasteering or Paddle surfing) or you can do it on your own by going directly from the beach where you are. The advantage of having a local is that they will show you the most charming places and the richest ecosystems, they will make you discover small underwater caves, they will tell you about marine fauna and flora and you will optimize your excursion and be able to transfer your new knowledge in another trip.

Diving

Diving is a well-known sport and there are no explanations for it. If you like to be underwater enjoying the advantages of the bottle, you have plenty of options on the island that offer diving trips in wrecks or underwater caves or simply to discover the Mediterranean seabed. There are usually some in almost all the urbanizations, but we recommend the area of Ciutadella in the same port you can find the company Dive Inn Menorca and in the north, Fornells, is an ideal place because you can dive in the area of the northern marine reserve that is protected. There are several companies located on the same promenade in Fornells such as Diving Center Fornells or Merak Diving Fornells that offer this type of experience.

Jet Ski

A very fun and dynamic activity that allows you to raise your adrenaline. It is rather thought for a great intensity, but of short duration, therefore, it is not usually a good option if you want to discover corners of the coast. If, on the contrary, you like speed and strong emotions, of course this is your thing! In the urbanization of cala’n Bosch you can hire this type of activity.

What to do with children in Menorca? Where to visit as a family?

Menorca, as we have already noted in other articles, is an island that offers a lot to all types of tourists who visit it, and provides a wide range of leisure and entertainment, cultural, learning and nature enjoyment possibilities for families who come with their children, whether they are young or not so young. We believe that learning about cultures and landscapes as a family helps to create stronger family bonds, to understand and have a unified vision of the world and to create common and unforgettable memories and anecdotes.

Visit Menorca as a Family

Menorca is much more than beaches and sunshine, in fact more and more Menorca is not understandable without everything else, its path of horses on foot, on horseback, on bicycle, running (…), its white villages, its small ports, its kayak trips along the cliffs, its Talayotic culture, the rich urban culture of Ciutadella or Maó, the popular festivals, Sant Joan, the gastronomy, the calderetas (…), the millenary lighthouses, the landscapes of the south, those of nortes, the Minorcan farmhouses, the lands between dry stone walls (…), its idó people!

Minorca is quiet compared to the other islands, especially and as in other places, outside the high season.

Obviously during the high season the tranquillity will not be so much, but it is still much quieter and less overwhelming than many other places. Menorca allows you to get lost in the summer with your family in more remote places where the beaches are more uninhabited if your children like walks in the woods among the pines and oaks.

What to do with children in Menorca? We will try to help answer this question and give you a variety of possibilities to inspire you and give you some ideas for your trip. It will depend a little bit on the age of your children and their/your concerns.

Activities on the sea in Menorca: we have a more detailed article on this subject here, but we will tell you very briefly.

It can be fun and entertaining for the children or youngers of the house to make a boat trip through the coves of the south with some stops and lunch included as Menorca Blava does, that has departures from 10h to 17h. You can also rent a small boat without a licence for 3-4 passengers, try paddle surfing or maybe a small kayak excursion around the beach where you are (also for families with children from 3 years old) and if you or your children are more adventurous and want to discover a little visited Menorca there is the possibility of doing Coasteering in Menorca that usually combines kayaking with snorkelling, jumping into the sea (optional) and visits to caves, there are affordable routes for ages from 5 years.

Visit El Toro: The highest mountain in Menorca, ‘El Toro’, is located right in the geographical centre of the island, in the region of Mercadal, a small village of few inhabitants with a lot of charm. If you visit the village we recommend you go to the centre where you will find one of the oldest and most famous cake shops on the island; “Cas Sucrer” and buy the typical “Carquiñols” which are like crunchy almond biscuits that children usually like very much. From the top of the mountain ‘El Toro’, on a clear day you can see the whole island from coast to coast and all around, one of the best views is the north where you can see perfectly the bay of Fornells and Cavallería. At the top, you will find a small church, a small Bar-Restaurant and even, in the parking area some tables to eat or drink something under the Mediterranean pine.

Defence towers of Menorca: If your children like a bit of history or even fantasy or the monumental character of certain buildings, it can be very interesting to take a tour and visit the different defence towers around the island, some of them better preserved such as those in Fornells or Ciutadella. It doesn’t have to be an exclusive day, and if you go to some places close to them, take advantage and visit some of them. The best known are:

·         Ciutadella: Torre de Sant Nicolau and Torre “Des Castellà

·         Fornells, at the end of the village, very easy to reach.

·         Sa Mesquida, on the same beach

·         Sa Nitja” tower is on the way to the Cavalleria lighthouse.

·         Alcaufar

·         Punta Prima, is in the same urbanization

·         Addaia, in the same development you have access to it.

A related visit that can also be fun is the Castle of Son Felip or Fort Marlborough, a fortification made by the English during their domination. They do guided tours, is in the part of Mahon to the town of Es Castell.

Visit Ciutadella: here you will find our specific article about Ciutadella (link).

Talayotic settlements in Minorca: Minorca has a unique prehistoric culture that deserves a bit of your time as it will give you a lot in return. Also related to the culture, the stone buildings, but much older, there are many remains from the Talayotic period, that is about 1000-1500 years BC that are unique in the world for some special characteristics but above all for a unique architectural element known as “Taula” (from 700 BC) which are T-shaped pillars that are found in many of the villages. There are several that are in good condition but above all the following ones are easy to visit with children and are in the countryside which gives them a sense of absolute freedom.

The best villages to visit are:

·         Torralba de’n Salort: In this village you can find the biggest Taula of all the villages in Menorca and one of the best preserved.

·         Torre d’en Gaumes: Very prepared to make visits of easy access and with a great extension, one of the biggest ancient towns of the island

·         Talatí de Dalt: Surely this is a very characteristic image since the Taula has another unique inclined element.

·         Naveta des Tudons: An ancient burial monument, it is the best preserved and the largest of this type of unique construction in the world.

Lighthouses of Menorca: A tour of the lighthouses of Menorca can also be part of the family’s itinerary and programme. Some of them are in spectacular locations and the landscape alone is worth the visit.

The most interesting ones:

·         Faro Nati: It is located in the area of Ciutadella towards the north, you can easily access and it is well indicated. There is an air-conditioned car park and you have to finish walking about 200 metres. This area is interesting because it is different as it is totally exposed to the north wind, there is almost no vegetation and you will be able to see some round stone buildings that will surely surprise you. They are called “pont” and serve to protect the herd in case of storms or blizzards.

·         Cavalleria Lighthouse: It is a few km away from Cavalleria beach. The lighthouse is located on a 94m high cliff so you can imagine how impressive the landscape is. On the way and very close by you can stop and see a small port, a defence tower and very well preserved remains of what was once a Roman settlement.

·         Favaritx lighthouse: Here you can tell your children that you are going to visit a landscape as if it were the moon. It is in the area of Mahon, but you have to take into account that you can only access it freely in your car before May and from October onwards, the rest of the season you have to go in a special bus that leaves from Mahon.

The best beaches to go with children in Menorca: Here we propose you the best and easiest beaches with the best services, it is clear that if you are more adventurous you can go to many more beaches.

a.     Virgin beaches. These beaches are characterized by the fact that the parking is more or less close to the beach and the road is usually straight and easy, so if you go with children it won’t be so long

·         Son Saura

·         Mitjana Cove

·         Algaiarens

·         Binigaus

·         Cavalleria

b.     Urbanized beaches. In these cases, they are beaches that although they are in urbanizations are very beautiful and you will have all the facilities of access and services.

·         Cala’n Bosch

·         Galdana Cove

·         Saint Thomas

·         Son Bou

·         Arenal d’en Castell

·         Porter Cove

·         Punta Prima

Children’s parks in Menorca: Although all the family hotels in Menorca are well prepared with activities for children and related services, it is always good to have an alternative outside the premises such as both public and private parks in some bars or cafes that offer bouncy castles and the like.

·         Ciutadella: In the Plaza de Los Pinos there is a large park with separate areas for children and adults. There are also cafeterias where you can have a drink while the children play.

Plaza de “L’Empordà” this is more suitable for children although it also has a basketball court.

·         Urbanization of Cala’n Blanes: In this area you have several options for private parks. Above all we recommend the one at the Aquacenter which has trampolines, inflatables, zip lines and much more. Similar to this one you find almost in front Bar Park Aire and offers almost the same, maybe it has a more touristic and English atmosphere.

·         Mahon: Park of es Freginal. Right in the centre of Mahon, near a public car park.

In the square of “Sa Explanada” you will find a park but it is for younger children.

Water Parks of Menorca: This could be a very fun option for the family to do if you like this kind of attractions. There are 3 main water parks on the island.

         – Aquarock: It is in the Cala’n Bosch urbanization in the Ciutadella area. It has a wave pool and several types of slides. Apart from this they also have a go-kart circuit.

         – Aquapark Los Delfines: You can find it in the urbanization of Cala’n Blanes also in Ciutadella. It is very well prepared for families with children and the good thing is that when you finish you can stay a while in a children’s park with inflatables that they have at the exit with other attractions.

         – Splash: This is the last one to be built, perhaps the biggest or at least the one with the most options in terms of slides. You can find it in the Alcaufar urbanization in the area of Mahon

As you can see if you come to Menorca with children you have many options, you can do many things that your children will surely love. You can do a little bit of everything and take advantage of a visit to do some of the activities we have recommended. I’m sure that within your own hotel, provided that it is the type of accommodation you choose, there will be services for children, but do not forget to do some of those we have indicated, because it will surely be fun for them.

We hope to be able to update this blog article because there are many other possibilities that have not been contemplated and help you to enrich your family experiences in Menorca if you have loved it and want to visit us again.

Why do Coasteering in Menorca?

Coasteering is an exciting and very complete activity of tourism, sport and leisure that brings together several sports that can be done on the cliffs of the coasts; Kayaking, Surfing, Stand up Paddle (SUP), Hiking, Visits to Caves from sea or land, Snorkelling, Climbing, Rappel, Psychoblock or Jumps from different heights into the sea. They do not have to be all at the same time, but a combination of them depending on the possibilities and natural richness of the route, the interest of the participants or their level. Coasteering is getting to know the coast (the border between land and sea) in a deep, close, detailed way, from a perspective that other modalities alone do not reach.

Why do Coasteering in Menorca?

If you are one of those who likes outdoor activities, discovering incredible landscapes, the sea of crystalline waters, diving in the warm Balearic waters and venturing to the little known places where you travel, Menorca is undoubtedly the best place to practice Coasteering.

Menorca is characterized, and known, for its turquoise sea but also for its virgin coasts. Its coastline has an almost infinite richness with multiple types of rocks, colours, sand textures, rich sea beds, flora marked by the force of the winds and a great range of cliffs, which surround the whole island, of different heights, with shapes, caves and many possibilities (…) All this means that there are great differences in the landscape depending on the geography of the island where you are, north, northeast, east, south, west, and that each one has a special charm and charisma.

Menorca has not been the most popular or visited island in the wave of mass tourism unlike its other island sisters, and that is a great positive. This, together with the great zeal, during the last century, of the inhabitants to conserve the beauty of the nature that the island has been endowed with, makes this place preserve the most virgin and beautiful coastal landscapes of Spain.

Is Menorca different in the north, south, east and west?

The north of Minorca is characterized by a harsher, rougher landscape of bushes and small trees twisted and reinforced by the harshest winds. There we also find the highest cliffs up to 100 meters (in the ‘Cavallería’ area) but also areas of softer but almost always rocky topography. In this area we find beaches of reddish sand and rocks (the Codolars and the Macars) and cliffs also of this peculiar shade (pelitas), besides having other more greyish shades of the dolomite rocks. In the north is the natural marine reserve of the island, a deep blue place where fish and large numbers of marine species find their paradise, is the perfect place to dive and play chase these animals as if you were a mischievous dolphin. The north is the wildest place, and also with the beaches farthest from the last stretch of road.

The south, on the other hand, is a more benevolent place for fauna, where pine, oak and wild olive forests have grown in a less “traumatic” way (…) the typical Mediterranean forest. Here the wind and the seas do not blow so hard in the winter months. The cliffs are more numerous although this time they are mainly grey limestone and less steep, although we have places where the cliffs are also quite high in the area of Galdana, Mitjana or Cala en Porter. In the south we will find the most turquoise beaches and also the most popular beaches of the island, although there are numerous beaches much more unknown because you have to walk or kayak to them for more than 45 minutes. For those who 45 minutes of walking or kayaking is blessed glory, double glory to visit those beaches and hidden cliffs. Here the caves are numerous and some of them offer us great geological surprises, entering them by kayak and then on foot or by crawling through small holes is magical.

The West is characterized by having coves (small beaches) between areas of cliffs with an average height of 10 to 20 meters and are usually between residential areas as they are close to Ciutadella. In this area you will find the Pont d’en Gil, a very peculiar and attractive rock bridge over the sea that is worth visiting. From Pont d’en Gil towards Punta Nati, which marks the northern boundary), there are no beaches and hardly any vegetation, and the cliffs are higher, a place that is more difficult to reach both on foot and by kayak. The west has a very interesting Coasteering route jumping from cove to cove with a visit at sunset to the Menorcan rock bridge.

Definitely Menorca, the best place to practice kayaking or Coasteering! In summary and without a doubt, Minorca is the best place to practice Kayak and Coasteering with its nearly 200 beaches of crystalline waters, deep blue and intense turquoise, its many cliffs along its entire coast, its many caves and its great wealth of sea beds and warm waters in summer. Coasteering, from our point of view, is definitely the most intense and complete option to know this island.

Coasteering activities in Menorca

CoasteeringMenorca offers you different experiences with which you can get to know the most beautiful and otherwise unreachable coastal landscapes.

We can start with kayaking and enjoy the freedom of movement of these boats, learn to gently paddle the waters and discover the hidden corners of the Menorcan coast. We can, when the situation allows it, continue with marine speleology and enter some caves that are formed in the cliffs. Some caves are deep, others are round like the vaults of a church, others even have sandy beaches at the bottom, others you have to leave your kayak to visit and others you even have to walk, climb and crawl to find a hidden exit.  After visiting the caves or between caves, you can dive in the best sea beds of Menorca and get to know its bio-diversity. And finally if you are daring or just want to try we do jumps from the cliffs and from different heights into the sea 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 meters according to your skills. We have identified the perfect spots on the coast from where you can jump into the sea and feel like a bird without wings, well a cormorant looking for its prey. Our guide will explain the jumping techniques and help you feel confident making it a fun and memorable experience.

We offer tours and experiences all over the island and for all levels and audiences, family or friends, being our main outings in:

1. Cala’n Blanes

2.     Cala’n Porter

3.     Cala Tomás towards Escorxada

4.     Na Macaret

5.     Cala Morell

6.     Cala Galdana towards Macarella and Macarelleta

7.     Cala Galdana towards Escorxada or Santo Tomás

We look forward to enjoying ourselves with you and showing you the hidden treasures of the island!

The Secret Beaches of Northern Menorca. A real adventure

A real adventure for your next trip…

Menorca is a relatively small island, much more than Mallorca or Ibiza, (with a surface of about 60km x 25km) but it has a lot of impressive beaches. Of course, not all of them are known or easily accessible. The ‘supposedly’ prettiest beaches are usually the most famous and therefore the ones most people visit in summer (in winter they are still deserted!) and this takes away some of the charm of virgin paradise they have when there are few people during the less crowded season.

The most famous and crowded beaches in summer are not the most charming ones

So not always the most charming beaches are the most famous. There are more remote beaches, more difficult to access that are true natural and scenic treasures. What characterizes Menorca is that it is the best preserved and least developed of all the Balearic Islands. The Menorcan islanders have known how to care for and protect with a lot of misgivings and demonstrations (it must be said) the destructive impulse of the construction boom. And this now constitutes the greatest jewel we can have on the island, miles and miles of uninhabited, natural, unpaved and protected spaces. There are very few beach bars on the beaches, in fact, you can count them with the fingers of one hand on all 200 beaches. For some this is a disadvantage, but I think it is incredible and helps to make your experience with nature and sand much more satisfactory.

With Coasteering we invite you to get to know and discover seven of the secret and/or hidden beaches in the north of the island that can only be reached from the sea or after a good walk or mountain bike excursion.

Exclusive beaches in the North of Menorca:

The north of the island is normally characterised by a slightly rougher terrain and difficult access, with more cliffs in proportion to sandy beaches, with a drier landscape and darker coloured stones and sand. What in principle may be a reason for rejection or looking for other options for those who have not yet visited these beaches, is actually the perfect opportunity to discover the most beautiful beaches of Menorca.

Among them you can highlight:

CREO QUE HABRÍA QUE PONER UN MAPITA CON UNOS NÚMEROS Y EMPEZAMOS DESDE EL NORD-OESTE PARA ACABAR EN EL NORD-ESTE

  • 01 Playa de Cala en Carbó: This is a beach of about 200 meters of sand and oval stones well polished reddish color, we call Macar to this type of beach for having these rounded stones eroded by the waves of the sea (macs). Cala en Carbó is hidden behind one of the popular beaches in the north of the island, Algaraiens which is near Cala Morell. It is the great secret corner of Menorca as it is quite inaccessible, one of the wildest lands on the island and many other places. If you find it difficult to find it, you can discover it with Coasteering in the exit that we propose from Cala Morell (poner link) passing by Ses Fontanelles, Est Tancats and Es Bot.

Hidden just behind an outcrop of land (Punta Rotja), which can be seen from the beach of Algaiarens, this corner, although it is of reddish sand and with more stones than those of the Caribbean of the cinema, we can assure you that it is a paradise that few know and that only by boat or after a good excursion walking, not without some stumbling, it is possible to discover it.

How to get to the cove at Carbó or Platja Punta Rotja? It is difficult to access by land, although there are roads that lead to this beach. We will try to guide you.

If you want to get there on foot it can be complicated. First you should go to Algaiarens beach, which is the road to Cala Morell, but before arriving there is a detour indicated. It is better to leave the car in the first parking lot you find that is farther away from the beach of Algaiarens. You have to walk following the dirt road and go to the area that passes by the watering holes, pass a small bridge and in a moment you will have a crossroads, you have to go to the left and jump a barrier, follow the path that takes you up to a hut at the top of the hill. Just there you should notice that next to the wall of this land there are blue marks that you should follow as they mark the way to the beach of Cala Carabó. It’s a long stretch walking for 2 hours almost without stopping.

From the sea it is much easier as you normally leave from Cala Morell or from Algaiarens itself.

  • 02. Cala’n Calderer: This beach is one of the most inaccessible, far from the world. It has fine, dark sand like almost all the beaches in the north. You have to walk about three and a half kilometres with ups and downs to reach this deserted beach where you will find few swimmers even in the summer season. Only perhaps you will see some boats looking for solitude and the blue mixed with the turquoise of these waters. Of course you will not find any services here, nor any trace of civilization nearby, only the passage of the inexhaustible Camí de Cavalls that surrounds the whole island without prejudice to civilization, the tramontana, the ariscous spaces or dense vegetation.
  • How to get to cala’n Calderer? Park your car in the Binimel.là parking. From there, pass the beach of Binimel.là and continue leaving the sea on your right. Continue and you will cross the beaches of Pegondó, Pregonda, you will go through a forest along the Camí de Cavalls. After passing a paved lane you will find Cala Barril where the last stretch is waiting for you. Here you will have to climb a hill and continue for about 2 km in the open air. Total distance from the car park 5 kilometres and 1h15 of walking. Just remember to bring plenty of water, sun cream and good shoes.

  • 03. Caleta de S’Elisabet: A little corner also quite hidden right next to the cove of Binimel.la. It is easily accessible (about 800 metres from the Binimel.là car park) and is the cove with the largest area of sand of the five others that surround the area of Binimel.là. You can take advantage of this to see it when you go to visit Cala Mica as they are very close to each other. It has 2 types of sand, one pink and one dark and larger grain. The seabed is made of sand and rock and is ideal for diving; remember that here you are in a marine reserve!

As an interesting and exemplary fact, in the 80’s this area was ready for urbanization. The protest movements of the islanders and the awareness of the various institutions worked one of the many natural miracles of the island; the project disintegrated leaving nature as the main protagonist, as in many other places on the island.

How to get to S’Elisabet cove? Leave your car in the Binimel.là car park and head north along camí de Cavalls (the sea on your left). You will pass the cove of Binimel.là, the Cova des Ponts and you will arrive at your destination. If you go on a little further you will find the racó d’en Miquel and the tip of Binimel.là. In 15 minutes

  • 04. Cala Mica: This is a beach that very few people are lucky enough to visit. It is usually the Camí de Cavalls walkers who have to go there to discover it. It is a rather inhospitable spot, but, or because of that, charming.

How to get to Cala Mica? It has a relatively easy access (about 2000 m from Binimel.là where you will find parking) as it is relatively close to the beach of Binimel.la which is known to be the beach where you leave your car to go visit Pregonda. But Cala Mica is just in the opposite direction and has nothing to envy to any beach in the North and you can also enjoy the tranquillity and surely a relative solitude as few people have any idea that it exists.

  • 05. Cala’n Tosqueta: This is another beach that is far from any civilization and where you will feel that you have conquered this piece of the world for the first time. It is undoubtedly another of Menorca’s great jewels. It is an extraordinary beach surrounded by a rocky landscape, where the plants and bushes are small, and there is no shade to shelter from the sun. The beach of Cala in Tosqueta is protected from the north winds thanks to its arms and an island located just in front that acts as a double barrier. Following the same coastline as Cala Podent we can reach this little beach which is not very well known for the effort that has to be made walking along the coast and under the sun (about 5.5 km). If you are lucky enough to have a boat, it will be easier for you and you may find other sailors enjoying this little spot. If you venture on foot in the summer, don’t forget to take plenty of water with you!

How to get to cala’n Tosqueta? Follow the road signs to the Son Park urbanisation, which belongs to the municipality of Mercadal (14km). There are about 70 free car parks 100 metres from the beach (check early in the summer months when they are sold out). From the Arenal de Son Saura look for the camí de cavalls and head north about 5 km. Wear good shoes, water and sunscreen in summer and avoid the north or north wind.

  • 06. Cala Podent: Very close to Son Parc (not visible from there) it is relatively easy to reach from the coast.

It is a small beach of about 50 metres in length and is the result of a narrow, deep sea inlet with two tiny, sheltered coves.

How to get there? Access is via a path, which is not the Camí de Cavalls, from the left of the Arenal de Son Saura, a journey of about 20 minutes along the coast. A quiet, beautiful and paradisiacal spot. Although it is relatively easy to get there from the coast, it is very possible that in high season you are not the only one.

FOTO

  • 07. Mongofre and Arenalet de Mongofre: This small beach is very close to the Na Macaret urbanization which makes it easy to access by sea in a kayak since it is relatively close. It is part of the network of protected natural parks in Menorca, and it has a very peculiar emerald green marine reflection. It has a rocky bottom, which makes marine life more abundant and biodiverse in flora and fauna. It is the perfect place to anchor and stop to dive.

FOTO

If we continue a little further and go along the coast we find another of the less known beaches; Arenalet de Mongofre practically identical to Mongofre but even quieter than this one.

You can make this excursion with us, here you will find the link to this beautiful route (poner link)

  • 08. Cala Tortuga and Cala Presili: Located next to each other and in the natural park of S’albufera des Grau, these two beaches are ideal for families, as they have fine white sand and are shallow coves where children can play comfortably with parents watching them from the beach.

Cala Tortuga is the larger of the two beaches. It is also known as the Morella sandy beach. Behind it there is a lagoon, a paradise for many birds. You will be able to see many interesting species resting and getting strength to continue their journey.

Cala Presili, also called Capifort beach, is the closest beach to the Favàritx lighthouse which is drawn at the bottom of a long arm of rock and earth.

How to get there? Park at the Favàritx lighthouse car park and follow the well-marked Camí de Cavalls. About 1000 meters with 15-20 minutes of hiking on dirt road and stones.

Like most beaches in Menorca there are no services, restaurants or other distractions – Lets enjoy!

WHAT IS COASTEERING or COASTERING?

ARE THEY JUMPS INTO THE SEA? CLIMBING OR ABSEILING DOWN THE CLIFFS? KAYAKING ALONG THE COAST ???

Coasteering is an exciting and very complete tourism, sport and leisure activity, that brings together several sport modalities that can take place in the coastal-marine strip (mainly zones of cliffs); activities like Kayaking, Stand up Paddle (SUP), Hiking, Visits to Caves from sea or land, Snorkel, Climbing, Rapel, Psicobloc or Jumps of different heights to the sea. One does not have to do all activities at the same time, but a combination of them according to the possibilities, the interests of the coast, the interest of the participants or their level.

Coasteering is getting to know the coast (the border between the strip of land and sea) in a deep, close, meticulous way, from a perspective that other modalities alone do not reach.

From TUUR we are innovating in this sport, we have added new modalities and we have given more sense to Coasteering as it is known today. We have looked for programs adapted to all audiences and interests to discover the most beautiful and unreachable landscapes with other modalities and enjoy a unique experience.

WHAT IS THE BEST PROFILE FOR COASTEERING?

FAMILIES: This is the profile of participants who most like to do this sport. Families love to discover and learn together. The ideal age to start is 7-8 years old accompanied by parents. Kayaking along the cliffs and entering the caves that splashes the coast, is already an overwhelming experience, and if we add the diving we will dream all night with the transparent and turquoise sea. You can do jumps (which are always optional) adapted to the preferences of everyone, from 2m, 3m, or 5m.

WHOEVER WOULD LIKE TO ENJOY THE BEST EXPERIENCES OF THE ISLAND: Groups of friends, nature lovers, people looking for different experiences, exclusive landscapes or adrenaline. This is an activity for everyone and everyone will seek pleasure to what he/she likes most, whether kayaking, visiting the beautiful caves with their pools of crystal clear water or diving or climbing or jumping, or just everything, why not!

TEAM BUILDING and INCENTIVES: We special programs adapted to these groups with games and dynamics at sea, teamwork and fun competitions, whether in kayak or Stand up Paddle.

SCHOOL PROGRAMMES: We do school outings in kayak to get to know the places on the coast that we cannot reach on foot or by swimming, to visit the most beautiful and fascinating caves. It is an adventure and also educational.

HEN AND STAG PARTIES: If you’re looking for a little adrenaline and get out of the ordinary, we can also create a different experience for you. Always adapted to your possibilities and your level we can make jumps of up to 9 meters if you show that you have a good balance. Laughter is guaranteed.

COASTEERING IN MENORCA?

We believe that Menorca cannot be known in its entirety without Coasteering. The best of Menorca are its coasts, its turquoise and crystal clear waters. And Menorca has learned how to preserve its coasts, its millenary landscapes without the trace of urbanism and real estate speculation. Its coasts and cliffs are 95% virgin, and in our opinion it has the best beaches and cliffs of all the islands and the peninsula, taking into account the wonders we can find in Mallorca, the coasts of Alicante, Asturias, Cádiz or Málaga. (…). Menorca has made us fall in love and for that reason we want you to enjoy these natural treasures from a near and respectful way.

KAYAKING – COASTEERING?

The kayak brings us closer to the most inaccessible places of the coast and the cliffs, places that the own approach on foot or dexterity is not possible. In the same way the kayak helps us to travel long distances in a short time being our provisioning center, our floating island for resting or the viewpoint that allows us thousands of views and possibilities.

Thus Kayak and Coasteering form a perfect symbiosis giving us infinite possibilities instead of limiting us to specific places, the best places are within our reach.

COASTEERING HISTORY

The Coasteering or Coastering (with spelling error) happened like many other things, by chance and the need to meet another goal. In this case surfers from the coast of Wales in search of the best waves had to climb and jump from cliffs to reach these special places, the perfect waves. And hey… that was fun too! almost as much as surfing!! Here’s how the Coasteering started in the 1970s.

And it is not until this decade that begun to be popular, to find more and more curious, lovers and adepts to this sport. With good reason, Coasteering offers great and very complete opportunities to know the best of the coasts, having fun in a very different way.

WHAT EQUIPMENT IS USED IN COASTEERING?

The equipment to take to the Coasteering is the sum of the equipments of each one of the modalities that we will do in the tour.

– Climbing, Psicobloc and Rappel: Ropes, Carabiners or equipment to make natural anchors, Helmet, Harness, Closed Footwear, Cat’s Feet, and others specific to sport, classic or artificial climbing and regulated Vest.

– Kayak | Stand up Paddle (SUP): Kayak, Board, Oars, Life Jacket, Waterproof Boats, Radio, Beacons (…)

– Snorkelling or diving: Goggles and snorkel, fins, buoy signalling (…)

– General Equipment: Depending on the temperature of the sea you will need neoprene or not, but you must always have a first aid kit, radio or mobile if we have coverage without forgetting other important elements that every sportsman or mountain lover should have in his equipment (appropriate clothing, knife, front-piles, auxiliary rope, sunscreen, water, food …), have basic knowledge of the activity and common sense.

Keep in mind that as in all sports there are weather conditions on land or at sea that make it very difficult to perform activities safely. Be cautious and avoid situations in which you are not prepared or are simply unfeasible. The knowledge of the sea, the natural environment in which we are, coastal areas and mostly cliffs is essential to make wise decisions or fully enjoy this sport. An activity that in principle can be simple can be complicated if we are not closely advised.

Having the experience of a local guide assures a successful adventure in all senses, not only do we talk about safety but you will also make the most of years of accumulated local experiences.
